  1. Han was the main mentor character in the Force Awakens, not Maz Kanata. He provided aid, training and insight to both Fin and Rey in a Hero’s Journey structure much more than Maz. Also, his role in the movie is also identical to that of Qui Gon and Obi Wan (Guiding the heroes, then sacrificing their lives in front of them). Maz would reflect the role of Yoda in Episode 1 (having a relationship with the mentor and providing the hero a gift – acceptance into Jedi training (Yoda) or a lightsaber (Maz). Running with this “secondary mentor” type archetype, Princes Leia would be the Maz Kanata/Yoda of Episode 4. She has the prior relationship with the primary mentor and provides the Hero (Luke) the boon of acceptance into the rebellion. Maz Kanata is more of a ally than the primary mentor.
