The Meaning of Sithmas

 The Meaning of Sithmas

Since 2009 I have been celebrating Sithmas. At least that’s how long I’ve been calling it that. I have probably been doing it for far longer, but I know that’s the first time I started calling it Sithmas. Many people get caught up in words like Christmas, and Happy Holidays, and what is considered politically correct to use and say during this time of year.

I for one have never been that hung up on it, I say do what feels right to you. And for me, I have always celebrated Christmas with a bit of Star Wars mixed in. So for me, I have started to say Merry Sithmas instead. It’s just an expression of my Fandom during the Holiday season. I have always shared my love for Star Wars through the Holidays, well year round really, ever since the first time I was given a Han Solo figure, the wonder of what Star Wars goodie might I get this year, or give when it comes to my Children, has been a part of Christmas that I look forward to. But this time of year even Star Wars meme’s take on a festive feel, so why not Christmas. Each year my family pulls out the Ornament box, and along with all the keepsake ornaments like baby’s first Christmas and so on and so forth are my Star Wars ones that I bought from Hallmark over the years. And a few from other places. But these always go up. Every year. Even before I started saying Merry Sithmas, we had a Sithmas Tree and I never even realized it.

Another aspect of Sithmas is wearing something Star Wars. Or at least I like to always have a Star Wars T-shirt on under whatever I’m wearing. ‘Star Wars to the core’ as I like to call it. With my gear on and usually a marathon of Star Wars playing on one of the TVs in the house the stage is set. For me Sithmas is all about sharing my love for Star Wars with my loved ones, family, and friends. Discussing the films, the tv shows, and their impact on the books, the many possible outcomes that could spin from the new additions to the franchise are some of my favorite things to discuss with my Father. He and I both enjoy reading the novels, but he doesn’t read as much comics, so he always has questions about what fits where. And this tends to get others in the room involved, next thing we know we’re explaining what happened during the New Jedi Order with some friend or family member who isn’t as into Star Wars as we are. But Christmas is a time of gathering and what better place to share our love for Star Wars!

And Sithmas will only continue to get better as me move towards 2015 and Star Wars Episode VII. While the future of the Star Wars Expanded Universe might be shaky, the fact that Sithmas 2015 will be one of the best to come in a Century fills me with a warm glow that I can only image a Jedi must feel when walking in the caves of Ilum.

Will you be celebrating Sithmas this year?

Merry Sithmas!
Merry Sithmas!

I feel you buddy. I’ve been saying Sithmas since 2007, only I had a hyphen in mine Sith-Mas… Anyway, here’s an image I created for Facebook back then after Dark Knight came out. I saw the first Star Wars in the drive in theatre when I was five. And I love that Star Wars will be around long after I’m one with the Force. AWESOME!!! All that’s missing for me these days is the drive in theatre. Later Everyone!
