Electronic Arts hit the jackpot with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, as the game generated a lot of profit after selling more than ten million copies during a very short period. Fallen Order put the Star Wars universe back on the gaming map, as it created an audience that keeps asking for more installments of the game featuring the young Jedi Cal Kestis. If the recent rumors are true, then Electronic Arts is ready to announce a sequel and to set in motion a project for a gaming franchise similar to the one Ubisoft created with Assassin’s Creed. The developers have not announced a release date yet, but gamers are expecting to get some big news towards the end of the year.
How Did Fallen Order Become a Success Story?
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is not the first Star Wars-themed game ever released. In fact, there is a long list of games dating all the way back to 1983, but none of them managed to engage as many players as Fallen Order did. Up until the game’s release in November 2019, players satisfied their need for space-themed titles by playing games such as NetEnd’s Starburst, which is one of the most popular slot games of all time. Nevertheless, Fallen Order created a new and loyal Star Wars gaming audience, and its success is something that Electronic Arts will definitely want to capitalize on.
The studio has already announced that it is planning to release Fallen Order 2, and a lot of the game’s contents seem to be ready, but just like with the development of many other games that have been in production during the last two years, there are a number of things that have been put on hold. Many players would have loved the idea of getting Fallen Order 2 as a gift for Christmas 2021, but it feels like a more realistic release period for the Star Wars sequel is Q3 of 2022. This will give the studio a few extra months to work on the details, to think of ways to improve the current content and to think of ways to expand the game via DLCs.
Reallocating the Budget to Allow for a Bigger Fallen Order 2 Investment
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is priority number one for Electronic Arts. The studio is investing a lot of its development resources in the Fallen Order sequel, as the game can end up becoming a goldmine for EA. In order to increase the development budget, EA had to reallocate some of its investment funds. As a result, the project for Star Wars Battlefront 3 was put aside, and this means that it is highly unlikely that the Battlefront franchise will get future installments.
In all honesty, Battlefront never managed to become a player’s favorite, and its discontinuation is not something that was not to be expected. Nevertheless, Battlefront left EA with a lot of valuable knowledge about player preferences, and this knowledge can be used in order to make Fallen Order 2 better. Considering that FO2 is still under development, there could be space for an online expansion similar to the one RockStar released for Red Dead Redemption 2. Just imagine being able to create your own Jedi and to take on the galaxy in a Fallen Order online environment.
