An examination of new shots in the latest International trailer and the “Hope” TV Spot… [UPDATE: Now also covering the extended version of the new International trailer and several more new TV Spots!]
A young Jyn Erso runs as Orson Krennic’s ship flies overhead. Is she running to warn her father, or fleeing from the ship after he has been taken?
Jyn’s mother Lyra presents her with a necklace with what is likely a Kyber crystal and tells her to “trust the Force.” It is likely that Jyn loses some, if not all, belief in the Force, but will regain it in the course of the film. What are the circumstances of this scene? Lyra has a backpack on. Is she leaving? Is this before or after Krennic’s visit?
We see that Jyn still has the crystal necklace in the present. [Update: Someone on Reddit found the word “Force” written in Aurebesh on the crystal, with more writing speculated to read “Trust the Force.” I checked it out myself on the actual trailer and it does clearly say “Force.”
Thanks to Brent on Twitter for pointing me to the Reddit post (which I can’t find at the moment).
It is now confirmed that the Death Star will fire on Jedha’s plateau city. The Death Star is not yet at full strength, possibly still needing adjustments made by Galen Erso. Is Galen purposefully trying to stall the full power of the battle station?
Our heroes flee as Jedha is destroyed. It is interesting that this last shot, which we have seen part of in other trailers, is actually of Jyn watching the destruction.
Jyn saving a young girl during the fight on Jedha. This is the same girl we saw Jyn giving something (a toy?) to in the Celebration Reel.
A new shot of Cassian and Jyn on Eadu, where her father is being held. We also hear someone screaming “father!” Is this the young Jyn or older Jyn?
A new shot of X-wings flying under the wheel structure that is in orbit over Scarif. “Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.”
“We’ll follow your lead.” A new shot from Jedha and dialogue establishing Jyn’s leadership of the group, at least at this stage of the mission. We know Saw Gerrera has a rebel base on Jedha, and according to interviews with Forest Whitaker it seems Jyn was taken in by Saw at some point after she became an orphan, so Jedha could be a place she is already familiar with.
“I’m not used to people sticking around when things go bad.” Who is she talking about? Her father? Does she feel abandoned by him? What of her mother? Is she impressed that Cassian still wants to help after a mission failure, or is she skeptical that he will come through in the end?
A new shot of Vader. I’m not sure how I feel about this image. His pose is somewhat awkward and the neck of his helmet looks a bit silly sticking out so far. I’m sure that this will make more sense in context. The hand gesture makes me think he is Force choking someone. We have seen another shot of Krennic and Vader in this same location.
Bonus: As I was writing this a new TV Spot with new footage was released.
New shot of Jyn (and a little bit of Cassian) on Jedha.
Another shot of the young girl Jyn saves on Jedha looking up at the sky. Is she witnessing the Death Star looming? Were Jyn’s heroics not enough to save her forever from the brutal Empire?
It seems like the plan to steal the Death Star plans may be Jyn’s idea.
Not sure, but I think this is a new shot of Cassian and other rebel treeps on Yavin. Note that with K-2SO in the background this would take place after Jedha, where Jyn seems to first meet the droid.
Chirrut, my favorite Rogue One character, dodging a blaster bolt so it hits another trooper behind him. I don’t care what his Databank says, this man is using the Force!
“Welcome to Rogue One.”
TIE Fighters exiting the wheel station over Scarif.
Chirrut gathering his strength for the final battle on Eadu?
And… some more new images from an extended version of the International trailer and several new TV Spots that I saw after publishing this article.
The four winged ship design we’ve seen exploding on Scarif, here taking off from Yavin base.
Warwick Davis’ character in action on Jedha?
K-2SO throwing a stormtrooper like it was a rag doll. Reminds me of Chewie.
“You almost shot me!” – Chirrut
“You’re welcome.” – Baze
A nice moment showing the relationship between Baze and Chirrut. This shows how they were inspired by the bickering peasant duo from Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, the same inspirations for R2 and 3PO.
The U-wing traveling through hyperspace.
More shots of classic Rebel ships and the battle against the wheel structure above Scarif.
Jyn knocking out a Rebel soldier who freed her. Looks like we now know why they put her back in cuffs for the trip to Yavin.
Until next time. May the Force be with you.
